Vienna celebrated a landmark year in 2024, achieving unprecedented growth across key tourism metrics. With 18.9 million overnight stays (+9% compared to 2023) and revenues exceeding €1.24 billion, the Austrian capital solidified its position as a global leader in sustainable tourism and cultural excellence.
In 2024, Vienna welcomed 8.2 million arrivals (+11%), surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 7%. Overnight revenue grew by a remarkable 12%, reflecting the city’s ability to attract high-value travelers. By October, tourism revenues had already crossed the €1 billion mark, showcasing the sector’s robust recovery and resilience.
The United States emerged as Vienna’s third-largest source market, recording 1.2 million overnight stays, a 17% increase from 2023. Austrian Airlines expanded direct connections, including a new Boston route, which significantly boosted the influx of luxury travelers from the U.S.
China recorded 300,000 overnight stays (+79%), re-entering the Top 10 markets by revenue. Increasing demand for luxury travel and additional direct flights position Vienna for further growth in the region.
Vienna’s commitment to eco-conscious travel is evident, with rail travel now accounting for 30% of visitor arrivals. The popularity of ÖBB’s Nightjet services played a key role, appealing to environmentally aware travelers, particularly from European markets.
Vienna’s thriving culinary scene earned it recognition as one of MICHELIN’s Top Foodie Destinations for 2025. The city boasts 14 MICHELIN-starred restaurants alongside traditional local favorites. Meanwhile, cultural events like Strauss 2025 cement Vienna’s reputation as a leading European cultural hub.
Vienna hosted over 50 major congresses and corporate events, each attracting more than 1,000 participants. These events underscored Vienna’s world-class infrastructure and contributed significantly to its economy.
Tourism continues to be a major economic driver for Vienna, contributing €5.6 billion in direct and indirect value. The sector generates employment, fosters innovation, and supports various industries, reinforcing the city’s economic resilience during uncertain times.
Vienna’s Visitor Economy Strategy prioritizes sustainable growth while enhancing the quality of visitor experiences. With new flight routes, increased rail connections, and a dynamic cultural calendar, the city is poised for another exceptional year in 2025.
